MnROAD Lessons Learned

Results of Phase I now available!

Mn/DOT hired the University of Minnesota Center for Transportation Studies (CTS) to do an independent study on the Minnesota Road Research Project (MnROAD), a full-scale pavement research facility opened to live traffic in 1994.   The results are summarized in the CTS report entitled:

MnROAD Lessons Learned

Mn/DOT also summarized their findings in 11 reports, available  on the DOT website under:

University of Minnesota study proves concrete is better.

Title: A Comparison of the Life-Cycle Costs of Asphalt Concrete and Portland Cement Concrete Pavements in Olmsted and Waseca Counties in Minnesota.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine and compare the agency costs associated with constructing and maintaining AC and PCC pavements on county roads in Minnesota.

For the complete study:  pdf

As described in the February 2003 Concrete Conveyor, these two documents describe the asphalt pavement industry study of rural interstate pavement costs in Kansas and the Kansas DOT response that refutes the study.
